07 / 15 / 19 | Candidates

If you are like many applicants, you may have never wondered about what questions to ask in a job interview. After all, isn’t the interviewer the one who is supposed to be asking the questions?

If you have this mindset going into an interview, you will miss a great opportunity to learn more about the position you are applying for. You also can run the risk of giving the wrong impression to your employer that you either aren’t prepared for the interview or that you don’t care enough about the position.

Continue reading to learn some good questions to ask in a job interview.

What Makes a Good Question for an Interview?

When it comes to good questions to ask in an interview, there are a few guidelines that help determine whether or not a question is valuable. Typically, you’ll want to make sure that the questions you ask are:

  • Focused
  • Open-ended
  • Designed to learn more about the position and your potential employer

With these tips in mind, here are some good questions to ask in an interview.

What Do the Day-to-Day Responsibilities of This Position Look Like?

This question allows you to learn more about the job that you are interviewing for so you can decide whether or not this is a job that you truly want. You can also learn about which specific skills or strengths are needed for this position.

Where Do You Think This Company is Headed in Five Years?

If you are planning to work with a company for a long time, you should make sure that the company is growing so you can grow as well.

What’s Your Favorite Part about Working for the Company?

This question is a great way for you to gauge how your interviewer feels about his or her job. If they are enthusiastic about their role, this can be a great sign. If they aren’t, it’s worth making a mental note of it.

Now “Seal the Deal”

Asking focused, but open-ended questions in an interview is not only a great way to learn more about the role, but it also shows the interviewer that you are actively thinking about how your skill-set and experience might align to the position.

Want to really impress the interviewer? Send your interviewer a thank you note as a follow up. Mentioning one of their answers to your questions, and how your experience or interest in the role is relevant, ensures that you leave a lasting impression and can even help you to “seal the deal” for the offer!
